An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out most but not quite all of the Sun's light. It's called an annular eclipse because just a thin ring, or annulus, of light remains visible. An annular eclipse only happens when the moon is at its furthest away point from Earth. In perspective to us on Earth, it doesn't completely block out the light from the sun so instead you get this incredible ring of fire around the moon. The path of the October 14 annular solar eclipse will span a wide area, offering different viewing experiences ...

August 9-11, 2023, Tina Harte Ballinger and Amy Ellisor of the GLOBE Goes to Camp team piloted a GLOBE STEM Camp at Hero Kids Foundation in Suffolk, VA assisted by Isaac Lee the Program Director of Hero Kids. Over 25 campers and 6 YMCA staff from the Armed Services YMCA in Virginia Beach, VA. joined in collecting of cloud, surface temperature, soil, and tree height data through the lens of "Environmental Stewardship". Campers loved the hikes through the forest and were amazed at the differences in the characterization of the soil in the forest as compared to that of an open meadow. The ...

In this episode of Eyes on Earth, we talk with Peder Nelson about generational science and the responsibility we have to future generations to study our changing planet. It takes more than just data to make sense of land change. And while remote sensing scientists work with the deep archive of Landsat and other land data available from the USGS EROS Center, everyone can put themselves on the timeline of Landsat data. Citizen science projects allow anyone to participate in the observations that help us understand the world around us. Details Episode: 96 ...

GLOBE Goes to Camp is in full swing for the summer with GLOBE data collection and informal learning opportunities for campers across the United States. Campers participated in hydrology, soil, land cover, and tree investigations throughout the month of June looking for freshwater macro-invertebrates all the way to who could find the tallest tree. Campers are engaging not only in STEAM based learning opportunities, but are also building a sense of environmental stewardship as they learn about how what we do affects the Earth as a system. Communities are becoming involved as they learn ...

As educators, we are all too familiar with the challenges that socioeconomic disparities pose to our students' learning and academic performance. This is particularly evident in the field of science, where students from low-income backgrounds often lag behind their more affluent peers in terms of achievement and engagement. One of the primary factors contributing to the socioeconomic divide in science learning is the lack of access to high-quality educational resources and experiences for students from low-income backgrounds. This can include everything from inadequate classroom ...

Join summer campers from over 30 camps across the United States as they collect air temperature, soil temperature, surface temperature, and water temperature study over the next two months. Campers will explore relationships between each of the GLOBE temperature protocols as they monitor differences across various microclimates found within their camp and community. Each camp will have the opportunity to explore data being collected by other GLOBE Camps and members of the GLOBE community (that's you!), expanding their understanding of data ...

Hey everyone! Our names are Emily and Caitlin! We are future educators, who are working hard to gain all the necessary experience and knowledge to be the best teachers we can be for our students. When looking at Natural Inquirer and GLOBE, we found a common theme, climate change. We chose this topic because we found it to be relevant to what is happening in our world today. Climate change is something that will impact everyone over time; it will bring challenges to each of our lives. It is important to realize that climate change has been impacting different animals, plants and ...

We are three education students who go to SUNY Fredonia, and we are all ready to learn more about science education and the resources we can use to teach young students science in the classroom. Investi-gator (Northern Research Station) We learned about a science journal called Investi-gator (Northern Research Station) for elementary school students, part of the USDA Forest Service's Natural Inquirer series. The focus of the journal is on the environment. The research found in this issue is based on the northern United States and the data is conducted by Forest Service ...

Hello there!! Our names are Caleigh Fleming and Ashley Kacmarski. We are both senior early childhood education majors at The State University of New York at Fredonia. We decided to explore the Animals and Ecosystems of the Southwestern United States Investi-gator . We chose this because when we were growing up, we were both highly engaged in science lessons about ecosystems and exploring animals across the globe. We thought it would be interesting to learn more about it from a teacher’s perspective. We want our students’ experiences to be as exciting and captivating as ours once were. ...

Hello, we are Emily and Lily! We are currently pursuing careers in elementary education at the State University of New York at Fredonia. We are so excited to become educators, and we find that students learn best through inquiry and making discoveries. We chose the Investi-gator (Northern Research Station) issue because we think that the topics like leaf color changing, impacts of the ozone layers on trees, and soil activity in the winter are all very relevant topics to where we live and hope to teach in western New York. We are both very passionate about our environment and think ...

One of the things that I find the most inspiring about The GLOBE Program , is the rich collaboration that it enables us to have with each other. Speaking for myself, I now have friends literally all around the globe, because of my engagement and interaction with GLOBE. I thought I would take a little time to write about a very inspiring intergenerational collaboration that I have found particularly enriching.   During the virtual GLOBE Annual Meeting in 2021, I was asked by a participant if we could meet up in a virtual room and chat. I was astonished to meet the extremely vibrant ...

We chose this topic because it relates to the dilemma of climate change that it's effect is getting stronger and stronger in the last years, and we chose 3 different soil types in our school to study climate change, and for 2 months we measured the Infra red to those 3 soil types and the its temperature and the weather temperature, also we contributed to GLOBE by filling cloud observations.
