In the GLOBE Clouds protocol and GLOBE Observer app, you can report if your sky is โ€œovercastโ€ or โ€œobscuredโ€. But whatโ€™s the difference? Below are some tips to help! All the photographs featured were collected by observers just like you - Thank you! I found โ€œobscuredโ€ and โ€œovercastโ€ very confusing at first, but when I understood what they meant, things made much more sense. Letโ€™s start by defining them: Overcast โ€“ The sky is completely covered by clouds (cloud cover greater than 90%). This means that you will see little or no blue sky. When itโ€™s overcast, you are looking at ...

GLOBE teacher Vicky Gorman and her middle school students have been working hard to help reduce the threat of mosquito-transmitted disease in their region. Before they began to use the Mosquito Habitat Mapper, they did some research to find out which mosquito-transmitted diseases are found in their location. They live in Burlington County, New Jersey, outlined in red below.  Based on a brochure produced by the NJ government about mosquitoes in their state, the students found out that the two most prevalent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are West Nile virus and Eastern ...

Guiding Investigative Questions for Data Collection and Research As you take tree height and other measurements as part of the campaign, we would like to offer several questions that you might like to answer. These Guiding Investigative Questions can help you with the "Why am I collecting this data and what does my data mean? Where are trees growing and why are they there? What can measuring tree height tell us about our local ecosystem? What is the relationship between tree height and land cover? What are the tools for measuring trees and the errors ...

It is the middle of winter here in Maryland, and it is cold!  We had a lot of snow last week, and are expecting more precipitation later this week.  Even though I know we have no active mosquitoes outside, I am still using the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper.  If you are also living somewhere where mosquitoes aren't currently active, we hope you will consider collecting data as well, so you will be prepared when active mosquito season arrives.   Wondering what kind of data you can collect when there are no active mosquitoes?  Great ...
