In GLOBE, there are two major perspectives on the global environment – the spheres and the Earth system. The Teacher’s Guide and the new sphere pages build on the approach that examines Earth as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere. The study of Earth System Science focuses on the cycles that connect the spheres – the Energy, Water, and Biogeochemical.

We had a fabulous webinar this afternoon in which students in both North America and South America shared their work on using GLOBE protocols to learn more about water in their environment. Meriam Kalloe, the GLOBE Assistant Country Coordinator for Suriname, brought together many students from Anton Resida Middle School who shared information on their use of several GLOBE hydrology protocols to study the quality of water in three locations near their school. Have you ever wondered how to collect data using a GLOBE protocol and compare that data to that of a satellite flying at over 15,000 Mph (24,140 Kmh)? A group of freshman students, under the instruction of Dr. Jodi Haney, at Bowling Green State University did just that.
As part of the ENSO Student Research Campaign , these students conducted research by collecting soil moisture , surface temperature , cloud cover , and relative humidity. Date-stamped comparisons were conducted among all these variables.

As spring begins here in the northern hemisphere, we often see seasonal changes in our precipitation patterns. As most of you know, heavy rains can result in the mass movement of land- known as "landslides". These natural hazards occur all over the world, and often result in destruction of property and even death. Right now I am sitting in my home office, watching the trees bend as the wind howls. My automated weather station in my front yard has an anemometer that is simply going nuts, and the wind vane is wildly careening back and forth as the winds pushes in from all directions. We have had wind gusts that exceeded 40 mph and now my weather station is reporting sustained winds at 25 mph.

We have all been dismayed to see the extent of the damage done during the recent landslides that occurred after forest fires had destroyed much of the vegetation, and then intense rain caused a horrific landslide to occur in Montecito. As you know, Phase III of the GLOBE ENSO Student Research Campaign is focusing on "Water in Our Environment" through a set of Guiding Investigative Questions. Across our planet, water is used for everything.
Check out this eye-opening Time Series of Global Irrigation and Groundwater Depletion Maps revealing geographical patterns in the use of fresh water for agriculture. The map visualization starts at 1950 and moves all the way through until the projected data to 2082.
This visualization shows the importance of water, water availability, and water conservation.
