30 Years of GLOBE - 30 Years of GLOBE Campaign

GLOBE is committed to environmental education and data literacy, and understanding the environment on local, regional and global levels by exploring past data alongside present data is important in measuring environmental changes at all scales, and planning for the future. The purpose of this year-long campaign is to take a deep-dive into the last 30 years of GLOBE data. GIO encourages participants, specifically GLOBE students, to consider what environmental changes are emerging in their local ecosystems through collecting and analyzing environmental data via GLOBE protocols across all four GLOBE spheres, exploring GLOBE learning activities and utilizing GLOBE databases.  Investigations exploring paired data, collected in the past and now is particularly encouraged.

The 30 Years of GLOBE Campaign will connect with other GLOBE campaigns happening around the world. Students are encouraged to share what they learn at the 2025 International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS). Students may also participate in the campaign by submitting their project to a regional Student Research Symposium as well as other GLOBE student symposia. 

1. Learn about and explore the essential principles of Earth’s climate system to help understand the environment around you. The essential principles include:

• Exploring climate as a complex system.
• Learning about how life is a major driver of the global carbon cycle and influences the climate.
• Understanding why climate varies and how it is influenced by man-made processes.
• Exploring how the general understanding of climate is improved through observations and research.

GLOBE students and other participants will have the opportunity to a earn digital badge by completing one or more of the following:

• Enter GLOBE data 
  • GLOBE has a robust database with over 200 million measurements. Contribute your environmental data today through the GLOBE Data Entry System or through The GLOBE Program's app, GLOBE Observer! 
• Collaborate with another GLOBE student or classroom
  • Partner, compare, and share your environmental data with a student or classroom from a different GLOBE country or region by using GLOBE Teams.
• Submit a student report
  • Take your data to the next step by submitting a research report to the International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS), a local/regional Student Research Symposium or other community science fair. Tell your story using any storytelling tool, such as videos, storyboards, ArcGIS StoryMaps, drawings and other story formats. 
• Take action
  • Use your data and story to make a difference in your local community. Share how you benefited the environment through your actions by sharing a photo or description via email to campaigns@nasaglobe.org.
• Participate in a local or regional campaign or Intensive Observation Period (IOP).
