June 2013 GGIC Summary

The month of June 2013 was the 8th occurrence of the Great Global Investigation of Climate.  This intensive observing period focuses on the collection of air temperature, soil temperature and precipitation.  Opunake High School in Opunake, New Zealand has participated in each occurrence of the GGIC since September 2011, and they are the featured school in this month's summary.

Opunake High School began entering in their air temperature observations into the GLOBE database in 2008.  While the length of record isn't long enough to look at how the climate is changing, you can still use an external database, such as the GHCN dataset, to compare your monthly temperature to the long-term average.

Throughout the month of June, students at Opunake High School took the following observations of daily maximum and minimum temperature.

Local climate records show the average daily maximum temperature to be approximately 13.9°C, while the daily minimum temperature has an average of 7.8°C, or an average June temperature of 10.9°C.  Using the data collected at the school, it was found that the month of June 2013 was 0.6°C warmer than normal, since the observed June average was 11.5°C.
