Hydrology field study conducted by Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka inline with the World Water Day 2015 in commemorating 20 years of GLOBE Program

Two day program from 23^rd to 24^th of March was organized by the Ministry of education of Sri Lanka (National GLOBE program) to mark the World Water Day (WWD) 2015. A group of 45 students from six GLOBE schools with their in-charge teachers participated for this workshop/ field day. The first day was assigned for the ceremonial events of the WWD and to make aware the students about water study. The remarkable event of the first was participating of Dr Deshbandu from India representing Asia-Pacific region. An introduction on GLOBE was given by him illustrating the objectives of the program and highlights of the GLE 2014.

The key note speaker for this event was Professor M.M.M. Nijam from university of Kelaniya and delivered a lecture on Water and Sustainability in which he highlighted the main parts of hydrological cycle and men's affects to the major parts of same. The importance of conserving water, in the phenomenon of sustainable development was stressed in his lecture explaining the measures of conserving water for future generations. In addition, the possible fields of researches were also introduced by Professor Nijam for the audience.

  A member for Sri Lanka GLOBE alumni Mr. Maduranga Rathnayake (a former GLOBE member of Maliyadeva College) was also participated presenting his past experience related to GLOBE environmental activities.

The group of GLOBE trainers assisted for the conducting water study and field day were Ms D Balasuriya, Mrs. Chethika Ambalangodage Mrs. Shanthi Siriwardhana and Mr. Tudor Senaratne. Refreshment knowledge on water study and protocols were given to the students to prepare them for the second day practical field works. Mrs. Vinodya Wijesuriya, Mr. Dilrukshi Hettiarachchi and Mr. Sarath played an important role in facilitating and organizing this event.

The series of hydrology protocols were conducted in Akuregoda Lake with three students groups. The data discussion was held in the afternoon of 24^th March. A hydrology research conducted by students of Sanghamiththa girls' college in Galle was presented as the last event of the program. A program evaluation and awarding of certificates for participation were take place finally before winding up.

Summary of program evaluation

The evaluation was conducted by using a questionnaire which was distributed among the participants (Students) to collect their responses regarding the program events. A question (Did you participate in this kind of field study organized other than by school?) was asked to know previous opportunity of participation for event like this but majority 26 have responded as "No" (72%) while eight have responded as "Yes" (22%). So this was a great opportunity to student to participate in field study on world water day. 

The responses regarding opportunity to participate in show interesting results as follows:

Questions 05, 06 and 07 were focused to know by marking the states of the interest they felt, students' knowledge acquired and practical skills gained as outputs of the field study.
