Observe Like Artemis Challenge Encourages Scientific Exploration Worldwide!
On Earth Day, we launched the Observe Like Artemis Challenge, inviting the GLOBE community to take observations of their favorite features of Earth. From 22 April through 22 May, the community collected data across the globe, taking inspiration from the astronauts who took observations of the moon (and Earth!) during the Artemis II mission.
During this challenge, we were excited to hear from Dr. Padi Boyd, deputy project scientist of the first Artemis Lunar Surface Science team at NASA, who shared a special audio message with the GLOBE community. We also had the opportunity to meet with members of NASA’s Artemis II Lunar Science team during the May GLOBE Observer Connect, where NASA geologists Amber Turner and Megan Borel shared their experiences training the astronauts to take scientific observations of the moon.
Together, the GLOBE community submitted over 16,000 observations during this challenge! Excluding observations collected by weather stations,* GLOBE users shared a total of 284 pedosphere observations, 918 hydrosphere observations, 3,900 biosphere observations, and 11,642 atmosphere observations!
Here are the top observation counts from each sphere:
Atmosphere
- Sky Conditions (Clouds): 10,750
- Surface Temperature: 476
- Snowpack: 377
Biosphere
- Tree Height: 979
- Biometry Tree: 978
- Vegetation Cover: 975
Hydrosphere
- Water Temperature: 168
- Hydrology pH: 147
- Dissolved Oxygen: 133
Pedosphere
- Soil Moisture via Gravimetrics: 107
- Soil Infiltration: 92
- Soil Moisture for SMAP: 71
Below are some examples of observations made during the challenge.
Thank you to everyone who participated!
*Data excluded from the count included all observations of air temperature, eclipse, barometric pressure, humidity, precipitation, and wind.
