GLOBE Europe and Eurasia! Join the Water Quality Discussion During the Phase III ENSO Campaign Webinar 14 November: “Water Quality in Europe”

What is the quality of water in the environment? The next Phase III GLOBE ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Student Research Campaign (SRC) science and research webinar will seek to answer this question – and other water quality questions. The webinar, “Water Quality in Europe,” will be held on 14 November at 2:30 p.m. EST (19:30 p.m. UTC).

In response to requests from GLOBE teachers around the world, the ENSO Phase III SRC is hosting this webinar with the goal of reaching out to scientists, teachers, students, and others from each of the six GLOBE regions.

The 14 November webinar is focusing on Europe and Eurasia. There will be presenters from Poland, Switzerland, and Croatia who will discuss how and why they measure the quality of their water, including: 

  • Poland: Participants will hear from Polish scientist, Ela Woloszynska-Wisniewska, about how water quality is measured in Poland. GLOBE teacher Joanna Gawor will share her “Best Practices” for having her students use GLOBE protocols to measure their water quality, and will explain what they have learned about their water quality.
  • Croatia: GLOBE teacher Marina Pavlic has invited a water manager from her city to share with participants what they do to ensure their drinking water is clean. Marina will have three of her GLOBE students tell us about their GLOBE investigations into water quality.
  • Switzerland: GLOBE teacher Markus Eugster will tell us about some of the ways in which his students test water quality in the beautiful mountain region where he teaches.

In addition to hearing from these regional specialists and GLOBE teachers, scientists, and students, NASA/GSFC specialists Dorian Janney and Brian Campbell will describe how NASA Earth-observing satellites are able to study water quality from space.

During Phase III of the campaign, the focus is on Earth’s water, with three simple guiding investigative questions:

  • What is the quality of the water in our environment?
  • What impact does water, both above and below ground, have on our environment?
  • How does water in our environment impact living organisms?

During Phase III, you can be as involved as you like. There are no commitment requirements, although we do hope to “see you” at a webinar to two – and would love for you and your students to share what you are doing! There will be two types of webinars:

  • Monthly Science and Research Webinars – These webinars will focus on our guiding questions as we learn about research currently being conducted by scientists at NASA and around the world. We will also explore a variety of both GLOBE and non-GLOBE resources that can be used to enhance students' understanding of the science behind the guiding questions.
  • The Short Observation & Data Analysis (SODA) Webinars – These webinars will focus on the data collected during the SODA protocol measurement period. Several schools (teachers and students) will present their data collection and what the data has told them about “Water in Our Environment.”
