The Chang'e-5 robotic mission landed a few hours ago on lunar soil and aims to collect samples of rock and dust to bring them back to Earth. The venture targets a site called Mons Rümker, a volcanic complex in a nearby region known as Oceanus Procellarum. The spacecraft's landing module should spend the next few days examining its surroundings and gathering materials from the lunar surface. The intention is to pack about 2 kilos of materials, which will then be sent to a module that can transport the samples to Earth. It has been 44 years since that same goal was last ...

Fall is a whirlwind of virtual meetings! We had the GLOBE North American Regional Meeting in mid-October and I attended some of the sessions of the GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting . I guess that is one positive from the move to virtual meetings; it opens the opportunity to attend if you cannot travel. Some things that came across my desk this month… Grant opportunity for Maryland schools: https://cbtrust.org/grants/environmental-education/ National Monitoring Conference (virtual) April 19-24, 2021 The documentary The Condor and the Eagle . 100Kin10 ...

The GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO) held the North American Regional Meeting (NARM) 100% virtually this year from 19 – 22 October 2020. The NARM Planning Team included diversity, equity and inclusion considerations in the planning of this event. Several aspects of this included offering live Closed Captioning for most sessions and pre-captioned recordings of Lightning Talks and Sponsor welcomes; soliciting a diverse team of speakers; providing guidelines to speakers to help them consider presentation needs for a diverse audience; creating a Zoom How-To Guide; and asking participants in ...

Even with the pandemic, participation the campaign has been good. Although the number of schools participating and the total number of observations was down from last year, it was still a nice number of each. So far this fall (Northern Hemisphere) spring (Southern Hemisphere) there have been over 3,500 observations from 135 sites (70 schools) across the world. Please see the list below. There are a number of schools in Saudi Arabia with over 100 observations. We also have observations from Brazil and an area of India where there are six new schools taking part in the urban heat island ...

Two weeks ago, I attended the ESRI Ocean, Weather and Climate (OWC) Forum. This Forum featured over 30 speakers across two half-days in the forms of lightning talks, keynote speakers and software demos. It was illuminating to see such a wide range of uses and projects with ESRI’s ArcGIS software within the Ocean, Weather and Climate realms. The demos shared some advanced mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS) opportunities within the ArcGIS Pro software. ArcGIS Pro is ESRI’s desktop paid application and has a ...

Spent quite a bit of time working on upgrading the software which runs the www.globe.gov website. The new environment went live on 11/16/2020. Although it may not look too different, behind the scenes a lot has changed. It also gives us some new capabilities and features in a more secure environment.  We'll be advertising and using these new features in the time ahead.  Hope all works well for you!

Brian Campbell here. I just wanted to share, with every participant on the Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign, that NASA has released two new amazing videos related to trees, tree height and tree research. Did you know that very soon, a new Earth-observing satellite will join the fleet of satellites that are monitoring the health of our home planet? The launch of the joint U.S.- European Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite is set for November 10! Right now it is undergoing final testing at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and will be sent aloft on a Falcon 9 rocket. Once it is in orbit, about 1,336 km/830 miles above Earth's surface, its task will be to collect sea level measurements with an accuracy of a few centimeters (for a single measurement) for more ...

Teachers and schools can only do so much to motivate children to learn complex topics. However, it takes input from parents to keep them interested and engaged.  Not everyone fits into the pigeonholes that school creates. Your child might learn differently from most others, but the classroom and teaching methodology are optimized for the majority. Take what your child learns in their classroom and expand on it, making it more complex according to their intellectual needs. Here are ideas for approaching it: Make learning fun every way you can No child wants to learn ...

Happy Fall! This is certainly not the typical beginning of the academic year we had hoped for, but I hear amazing things about GLOBE teachers across the country making it work remotely, through in-person hybrids and for some, completely in-person. I hope you find little tidbits here that you can use.  Stay safe and stay well friends! Resources that came skidding across my desk (aka my dining room table) this month: The STEM for All Multiplex theme of the month was “Leveraging Authentic Data Across STEM Curricula.” Follow the link to see the blog post, playlist and the ...
