Coming into the NASA SEES Mosquito Mapper program, I was beyond nervous. Living in Washington State in an area with few mosquitoes, I had no idea how I would be able to collect enough data for the final research project, especially since this was the first time I was conducting research on my own. In addition to that, the program was entirely virtual! As a visual learner, I was worried that participation might be challenging.

Through the SEES Mosquito Mappers internship, I have learned how to skeptically interrogate the world around us and devise profound questions that can shape our understanding of the natural universe. I came to this internship knowing very little about science except for the basics of the scientific method and the “facts” that we are mandated to memorize in our educational system. A new study using NASA's Global Precipitation Measuremen t (GPM) mission data entitled " Water vapor and soil moisture can predict afternoon rainfall " was recently published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal. Did you know that you can compare your GLOBE tree height data to that of the ICESat-2 satellite? You can compare any GLOBE tree height data to ICESat-2 tree height data using the Open Altimetry online tool at http://openaltimetry.org . This online tool is set up to be very user-friendly, but does require a bit of exploration to use it properly.
Below are two tutorials to help you understand how the Open Altimetry tool works and to help you get more comfortable looking at your data and comparing it to the ICESat-2 data for tree height.

Two European satellites have spotted a catastrophic oil spill in the Arctic Circle.
About 20,000 tons of diesel oil has leaked into a river in the Arctic Circle after a fuel tank at a power plant near the Siberian city of Norilsk collapsed last Friday (May 29). The Russian Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into the incident, as the plant reportedly waited for two days before informing Moscow authorities about the spill, according to the BBC .

This month we spent alot of time working through how to offer students who would have participated in the Student Research Symposia another option to share their work. We got it figured out and then the upload tool for reports had to be shut down! That was exciting! Thanks to the Community Support Team , we were able to accept the reports and get them up. Una de las investigaciones ganadoras a nivel institucional fue la realizada por un grupo de estudiantes del 3° de secundaria. Ellas compararon el tiempo atmosférico de Lince, distrito donde se ubica la institución educativa, con Bellavista, Callao, distrito donde vive una de las estudiantes.

Al año siguiente, 2019, los estudiantes realizaron el estudio del tiempo en la localidad y para ello se utilizó la caseta meteorológica instalada en nuestra Institución Educativa. En este caso, cada sección registró los datos de temperatura y humedad con el termómetro de alcohol y el termohigrómetro.
