GLOBE Africa Educators and Local Seychelles Officials Complete Training Workshop
From 28 to 30 April, a GLOBE training workshop was
conducted in Victoria, Seychelles, at the Ministry of Education.
Leveraging the school holiday period for professional development, the
Ministry hosted educators and officials from the Department of
Education–Curriculum Services, focusing on capacity building and
environmental science
education.
The training, which used equipment provided by YLACES through the GLOBE Plus Post award in 2024, covered core protocols in Atmosphere, Soils, Hydrology, and Land Cover. Sessions emphasized practical implementation strategies, engagement with the International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS), and participation in other GLOBE offerings.
Distinguished guests included Henry Jardine, U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius and Seychelles; Caleb Goddard, chief political/economic officer and acting chargé d’affaires for Seychelles at the U.S. Embassy in Mauritius; Myra Labiche, public engagement specialist, U.S. Embassy to Seychelles; Mr. John Lesperance, principal secretary (PS) for the Education Sector Development Department; and Mrs. Petra Etienne, principal education officer to the PS for Education Sector Development Department. Their active participation, including in field data collection, underscored the strong U.S.–Seychelles partnership in advancing Earth systems science, environmental monitoring, and science education.
