What is YLACES – And What Does It Offer U.S. Inquiry-based, Experiential Science Education? How About Awards, Scholarships, Grants, and So Much More!
Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists (YLACES) aims to assist and reward the implementation of inquiry-based, experiential science education where students do science and contribute to understanding of our natural world.
YLACES seeks to develop citizens with scientific habits of mind, utilizing the environment as a learning laboratory where students conduct inquiry-based research and contribute to a better collective understanding of our changing world.
Grants range from support for taking simple measurements to teacher professional development and working for pervasive inclusion of student research projects in science teaching. In addition, support is provided for prizes recognizing student achievement and effective teaching; needed infrastructure for contributing, storing, and sharing data and methods; and for science fairs/symposia that assess student work. (Are you a member of 4-H or Girl Scouts? YLACES offers grants for equipment to individual chapters, councils, and State organizations.)
Grants in the following areas will be made, subject to YLACES Board approval:
- Youth Environmental Science (YES) Medal (recognizing major outstanding contributions to youth learning as citizen environmental scientists)
- Implementation Grants (made in response to proposals supporting youth doing environmental citizen science, environmental student research projects, and building youth environmental science research abilities)
- Science Fair and Youth Research Symposium Grants (to encourage and assess student environmental science research projects)
- Invited Grants (proposals should be developed only in consultation with YLACES)
