Partnership Expands Field Investigation Area

WestEd/CCASN Partnership recently completed field and classroom training to offer Pacific Region GLOBE teachers an opportunity enable their students to collect field measurements in the areas of land cover, tree height, tree circumference, and biometry.  By connecting students to field investigations, teachers create outdoor classrooms that transform learning environments for students.

The Biosphere is divided into natural and developed areas. Developed areas include urban and commercial areas, agricultural areas and transportation. Natural areas include many different natural habitats: deserts, forests, water bodies and the like. All living things––including humans––depend on their habitat or land cover for survival. Land cover provides shelter, food and protection. Land cover also has a direct effect on the kinds of animals that will likely inhabit an area.

Students and scientists investigate land cover through the collection of data using measurement protocols and using instruments that meet certain specifications in order to ensure that data are comparable. Learning activities aid in the understanding of important scientific concepts, the understanding of data and data collection methodologies.
