U.S. GLOBE teachers – experience the U.S. Regional Student Research Symposia webinar “Writing Research Questions” on 01 February. The pre-recorded webinar is hosted by Keven Czajkowski (University of Toledo), Midwest Regional Leadership Team. Updated slides will be shared at 4:00 p.m. In addition, open office hours will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (EST) to answer questions.

Having students develop a GLOBE project can be daunting, especially for those new to field investigations or carrying out research independently for the first time. Developing a narrow, interesting, and doable (with the equipment on hand and in the time allotted) research question is the first step. Often, students attempt to solve the world’s problems with a complex question that cannot be answered within the time constraints of a typical school day. During this webinar, Dr. Kevin Czajkowski will help participants develop grade-appropriate research questions and discuss ways to incorporate narrower but more frequent field investigations throughout the school year. In preparation, teachers are encouraged to have a couple of research questions to share with the group.

What is up with the U.S. Regional Student Research Symposia? Well, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), students from across the United States have the opportunity to come together this spring at one of six face-to-face regional Student Research Symposia (formerly regional science fairs) to share the results of field investigations using GLOBE Program protocols.

Leading up to the science symposia, GLOBE teachers can view archived webinars, teacher blogs, and participate in open office hours, providing professional development on field investigations and enhancing scientific practices of the natural scientists in classrooms.

Each Symposium will include peer review of the student research posters presentations, professional development for teachers, networking opportunities for participants, as well as local field trips. The event is a great opportunity for students to engage with their peers and working scientists in a professional way.
