GLOBE Zika Education and Prevention Project Update
From 25 February through 01 March, the GLOBE Zika Education and Prevention Project team facilitated community development webinars for each of the three regions involved with the project (Asia and Pacific, Africa, and Latin America and Caribbean) in order to support them as the project transitions from the Country Mosquito Trainings (CMTs) to Local Mosquito Workshops (LMWs).
The project uses a “train-the-trainer” model to train individuals on how to use the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper App (GO MHM) to reduce the spread of the Zika virus. The community-driven project is striving to add 100,000 mosquito data points to the app; engage hard-to-reach, at-risk populations; and create regional networks of schools, organizations, and public health officials to limit the spread of Zika.
This spring, at Regional Mosquito Trainings (RMTs), the project team trained Country Coordinators on the GO MHM App, and on how to facilitate a mosquito training. Since the RMTs, Country Coordinators have organized 98 CMTs, trained over 2,400 individuals (T2 Trainers), and have added over 50,100 data points to the app. T2 Trainers are now able to submit LMW proposals, apply for community action grants, and organize LMWs to train students and local community members on using the app for mosquito and habitat identification.
Project webinars provided project status updates; informed Country Coordinators about administrative procedures designed to support T2 Trainers in organizing LMWs; and offered educational and community support resources (such as participating in the GLOBE Mission Mosquito Campaign, and including the GLOBE Mosquito Protocol Bundle in data collection). Finally, the webinars concluded with participants sharing strategies to successfully support T2 Trainers in developing local support networks and organizing community trainings.
