Getting Started

Getting Started

We are excited for your participation. Here is a list of requirements and materials you need to get started making contrail and airplane observations.

  1. Submitting Cloud Observations: Using the GLOBE Observer app

This project requires you and your team to make cloud observations and send the data to GLOBE. The GLOBE Observer app can sync with your GLOBE account by:

Use your GLOBE sign in email when you sign up to the GLOBE Observer app. NOTE - be sure that you are trained in clouds within GLOBE before signing up to GLOBE Observer.

  2. Download flightradar24 app

We recommend this app because it is free and easy to use. The app also has an augmented reality feature that allows you to see where the airplanes are at in your area by using the camera in your mobile device. The app is available for apple and android devices.

  3. Collecting and Reporting Airplane Observations

The NASA GLOBE Clouds team will create a google sheet for your team in order to receive your airplane information. The google sheet mimics the junior research contrail report form. Make sure you can edit the assigned google sheet; if any issues arise, please contact the GLOBE Clouds team.

NOTE: We still need your cloud observations through GLOBE or GLOBE Observer in order for the GLOBE Clouds team to match your cloud observations with the airplane information.

  4. Plan how to make the observations

The flightradar24 app, unlike the GLOBE Observer app, will require data or connection to internet to work. You could keep track of the cardinal direction you observed the airplanes and then use the flightradar24 website to go back in time and track the airplane you observed. Follow the instructions on how to use the app and website for more information.

Experienced GLOBE teachers have found that having a designated bag with clip boards, pencils, and data sheets or a science notebook works best. Teachers have also given roles to their students where they can specialize in one area. If you start small, those students can then train others as your group grows.

  5. Contrail Resources
