WEBINAR | The State of Trees: Rhythm of the North: Tracking the Vegetation Growing Period from Space
Event Time: 6:00 pm UTC - 7:00 pm UTC
Location: Online
Join us as we hear from Dr. Erika Podest, research scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as she discusses how the freeze–thaw cycles play a key role in high-latitude vegetation by regulating the timing and duration of the seasonally unfrozen period that defines the growing season and governs CO2 uptake and release. Recent warming trends have led to earlier spring thaws, contributing to increased vegetation productivity and earlier atmospheric CO2 uptake, though substantial variability remains due to differences in land cover, topography, and climate. Satellite observations now enable monitoring of these vast regions, providing critical insights into changes in the vegetation growing period and their implications for CO2 dynamics.
