ACTIVITY 1

Hello again!

My name is Dolores Dobrinjkic. I am a GLOBE teacher at Natural Sciences and Graphics Arts school in Rijeka (Prirodoslovna i graficka skola Rijeka). For 2023 spring phenology campaign students will continue observing the fig tree from previous campaigns. The tree is located in the park in front of the school. Thing to note is it that the fig tree is quite young and overshadowed by another tree. However, the branch we are observing is facing south and is exposed to plenty of sunlight.

GPS coordinates: N 45°20'13" E 14°25'32"
Altitude: 61 m
Latin name of the tree species: Ficus carica

We started observations on 7th February 2024. All buds were dormant.

Below is a photo of the fig taken with GrowApp application. Additionally, a photo of a bud is also attached.

ACTIVITIES 3 AND 4

Green-up photos of our leaves:

Green-up graph of our leaves:

We compared our budburst date to XV. Gimnazija in Zagreb. Their fig tree had buburst a month later than our tree, on 3rd of April. The students hypothesize this is due to differences in average temperatures between Zagreb and Rijeka. At the start of the March, daily temperatures in Rijeka reached 15°C, while in Zagreb they were around 10°C.

Compared to the previous year, the budburst date moved by 2 weeks. In 2023 out tree had budburst on 17th of March. Students hypothesized that due to the global warming, budburst date will continue to move towards the beginning of the year.
