Oklahoma is an ecologically diverse state in the Southern Plains region of the U.S. It is part of the central flyway for migratory birds, which makes it a sentinel location for West Nile Virus (WNV) surveillance. Why birds? Birds play a role in the WNV transmission cycle. Mosquitoes become infected with WNV when they bite an infected bird. Birds can develop high levels of the virus in their bloodstream. On July 2nd we´ve seen a wonderful astronomical event, teachers and students, all together at school: a solar eclipse! The sun partially “disappeared” (almost 80%) for a period of three minutes. It started at 16:15 and continued until 18:30 (local hour). Students were looking for the sun in the sky, using special solar viewing glasses provided by NASA. You may have heard the news- there is an exciting challenge this summer for GLOBE Observer users!
The challenge follows in the spirit of early cartographers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, and you can win one of two ways. First, use GLOBE Observer to map as much land cover as possible in any GLOBE country by September 2. The top data collectors in each GLOBE region will be recognized. The GLOBE Mission Mosquito campaign was delighted to have 23 IVSS projects submitted that used the Mosquito Habitat Mapper tool in their research. These projects came from students in elementary school through graduate students in college and were submitted from 15 different countries. You can view an interactive map of these projects here .

On May 28, 2019, NASA released ICESat-2 data through the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). This height data shows the elevation of ice sheets, sea ice, bodies of water, trees and forests, and much more. What we want for this campaign is to be able to compare student and citizen science tree height data to the ICESat-2 mission tree height data. Although the data is now public, it may not be in a form that is easily used for our comparisons, yet. We will be working with ICESat-2 scientists to determine the best way for us to use the data.
