Did you know that as part of the new GLOBE El Niño Field Campaign, which began on Tuesday, 01 March 2016, there will be a suite of six GLOBE measurement protocols (including the SMAP protocol) that will serve as ways to identify environmental changes affected by El Niño? There will also be regular webinars to discuss the mechanics of the campaign, give updates on data collection, and explore science with experts.
How can you join? Visit http://www.globe.gov/web/el-nino/members and simply click “Join Community” Please consider becoming a member.
How can you participate? If your students are taking measurements in at least two of the following protocols, you are participating. If your students are not taking measurements in at least two of the following protocols, you will need to do so.
Protocols:
- Max/Min Air Temperature
- Precipitation
- Surface Temperature
- Soil Temperature
- SMAP Soil Moisture
- Biometry Tree Canopy and Ground Cover
The next webinar, which will be held on 08 March (at 8:00 p.m. EST; 1:00 a.m. UTC, 09 March), is: “The El Niño Field Student Campaign.” During this hour-long webinar, participants will get the “nuts and bolts” about how to be involved in this GLOBE campaign. The webinar will cover the expectations for involvement as well as the goals for this campaign. Participants will learn how to navigate through the website, explore which protocols are involved, discover how to share updates on students’ data collection and research efforts, and be able to ask questions. The first webinar for this campaign, which was held on 01 March, was entitled, “What is “El Niño?” It was held on 01 March. This hour-long webinar included a presentation from NASA scientists describing the science behind the El Niño phenomena. Participants also learned how NASA is able to study El Niño, and what the predictions are for different regions around the world during an El Niño event. A variety of educational resources that can be used to teach others about El Niño and its impact on the planet were also shared with participants.
For those of you who were unable to attend the kick-off webinar, the recording can be viewed at http://go.nasa.gov/21HsKMW. The slides from Dr. Nieves presentation can be downloaded from the recording playback, and are also linked from the campaign webinars page: http://www.globe.gov/web/el-nino/el-nino-campaign/webinars.
