Soil Tent at 2025 NH Forest Career Field Day

On April 17, the New Hampshire GLOBE Partnership’s Earth Around Us Soil Tent joined other exhibitors at the 2025 New Hampshire Forest Career Field Day. Organized by the New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association (NHTOA), the event educates students in grades 7–12 about careers in forestry, wildlife, and natural resources, conservation and the forest products industry. This year, 750 students attended the event with their educators.

Maddy Czymmek, a soil scientist with the USDA White Mountain National Forest, showed off the tent alongside a small soil pit. She took the opportunity to talk with students about her career and explore the soil with them.

Students got their hands dirty, practiced using an auger, and were interested in how the soil could reveal the agricultural history of the area. Maddy said, “I enjoyed interacting with the students and sharing about my career, which many of them hadn’t heard about before.”

Cheri Birch from NHTOA reported that one student said it was nice to have exhibitors pay attention to his interests and to engage in conversation with him.
