GLOBE Countries Help Celebrate World Water Day
This year, World Water Day (WWD), took place on 22 March. It is an annual United Nations Observance, which started in 1993, that celebrates water and raises awareness of the two billion people currently living without access to safe water. This year’s focus was on Groundwater.
The GLOBE Implementation Office encouraged community members to participate and share their WWD activities – and the “call” was answered by GLOBE community members in in the Asia and Pacific Region, the Europe and Eurasia Region, and the Latin America and Caribbean Region. For example, GLOBE schools in Brazil surveyed their local waterways and created presentations on how rivers and streams affect flooding and landslides across the country. GLOBE Italy hosted its second annual “Rivers in Spring: Virtual World Water Day” event, with speakers and presentations about intersections between water and microplastics, climate change, agriculture, and groundwater.
Dr. Matthew Roddell, an expert in groundwater and the NASA Deputy Director of Earth Sciences for Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geophysics, shared a special WWD message on The GLOBE Program's Instagram. During the presentation, he explained what groundwater is, where you can find it, and why it is so important for us all to protect and conserve.
