North American Phenology Campaign

This fall there are two ways to participate!
- Monitor leaves on an individual tree using GLOBE’s Green-Down protocol.
- Take landscape photos for NASA’s PACE satellite mission using GLOBE’s Land Cover tool in the GLOBE Observer app. Volunteer observations will help verify PACE vegetation color indices.

Monitor leaves on an individual tree
Gather your materials
- Find data sheets and the field guide on the Green-Down protocol page.
- Print a GLOBE Plant Color Guide or use the built in guide in the GLOBE Observer app.
Collect your data
Measure leaf color change or growth twice a week by following the four quick steps on the Tutorials page or read the Green-Down or Green-Up Protocol for details.
Enter your data
Use the GLOBE Observer app or paper data sheets and Desktop Data Entry to share your data to the public database.

Volunteer observations will help verify PACE vegetation color indices to support the refinement of a novel data product. Learn more about how PACE is tracking leaf color change in this video: "Leaf Peeping with PACE" (1:25 minutes)
Gather your materials
- Download the GLOBE Observer app.
Collect and Enter your data
Choose a location where you can see the forest landscape. Use the Land Cover tool in the GLOBE Observer App to take photos in each cardinal direction, up, down, and also take a "Feature Photo" of the landscape where you see the most color.
Leaf color changes rapidly and regular repeat observations are appreciated!
