Teachers of Kindergarten to Grade 2 can use stories and observations of nature outside your door to help students understand how the systems of Earth (atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and pedosphere) are connected.
Start by reading the Elementary GLOBE story “ All About Earth: Our World on Stage ” to get an overview of some of the connections between the components of the Earth. The story follows a classroom of students as they prepare a play to learn how Earth’s processes are interconnected and how living creatures interact with those processes. [One 30- to 45-minute class ...

The U.S. Office is wrapping up the 2022 local Student Research Symposia (SRS) . Keep an eye out for stories highlighting these events. Thank you to all the teachers, students and Partners who made these events a success!
Alicia Carlson (new hire in our office - YEAH!) is working on a couple of GLOBE and Natural Inquirer crosswalks . If you are a pre-service or current teacher, contact us to find out how you can earn a stipend and create some teacher-friendly ways to use these materials together in the classroom.

I made this notebook because I wanted to make a better list of GLOBE schools with many measurements. At first, I tried to look at official metrics ( https://www.globe.gov/about/impact-and-metrics/schools-with-many-measurements ). Unfortunately, the number of data there was different from the number on official schools pages.
I asked for an explanation on the GLOBE forum, and I got the following response:
> "Different areas of the website count measurements differently. Some places count the number of rows of data across several database tables. Other places count ...

GLOBE completed another great month of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Intensive Observation Period (IOP) in March 2022. 107 schools participated and took a total of 1699 observations throughout the month. It is great to see more and more schools becoming active in this very important project. UHI is becoming more and more important around the world. Saudia Arabia, Croatia, Greece and Taiwan had many schools take observations during March. I am so grateful for the participation of all of the students and teachers and the great work they have done. I would really like to encourage all of the ...

Shortly after 03:30 GMT on Monday, Earth's orbit meant that for several minutes our planet was positioned directly between the Sun and the Moon.
In that time the Moon fell completely into Earth's shadow - temporarily turning it a dusky shade of dark red.
Its hue was created by sunlight being projected through Earth's atmosphere onto the Moon's shadowed surface.
The lunar eclipse coincided with a separate event - a super Moon. This is when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit and so appears larger than usual.
Those watching out for the resulting super blood ...

Education is constantly evolving and adopting new trends and practices. Technology innovations and changes in priorities have massively impacted the field in recent years.
Watch out for these three education trends in 2022 and the years to follow.
Acclaim for the Arts (STEAM)
Educators should prepare to tie arts into their curriculum. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) has transformed into STEAM to include art. Science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and art are the centers of educational programs to prepare students for future ...

My involvement in the Stem Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) program started sometime around early spring 2021. The involvement was preceded by a strong recommendation from Dr. Kevin Czajkowski, PI, GLOBE Mission Earth, The University of Toledo.
Indeed, to me as a member of the GLOBE International STEM Network (GISN), my participation in SEES became an opportunity to invoke the GISN mandate which includes to mentor and inspiring ...

World Water Day (WWD) is right around the corner on 22 March 2022! WWD began in 1993 by the United Nations to celebrate freshwater, and bring awareness to use and conservation of freshwater resources across the globe.
This year, the theme for WWD is Groundwater. Groundwater is often misunderstood because it is not seen easily, unlike rivers, lakes, ponds, or oceans. But, groundwater plays a very important role in freshwater sources, specifically in providing moisture for plants to grow, and water for animals ...

The Urban Heat Island Effect Intensive Observation Period (IOP) has started. The weather in the Northern Hemisphere has started to get warmer as meteorological spring started March 1. There was an amazing weather situation where I live this past Saturday. You can see in the images on the left that I drove about 20 miles (32 km) from my house in Michigan to the Oak Openings Park in Ohio. There is a warm front stalled across the area.
It was near 40 F (6 C) near my house but in the upper 60s (20 C) at the park. You can see in the right image that there was a warm front between my house ...

Wanted to post an update on new capabilities that are in the works right now...we hope to see these features coming out in the months ahead:
GLOBE Observer
1) We're working on the Hydrosphere protocols to add to the current set of Atmosphere protocols.
2) A new geofencing option is in test that will allow scientists to ask users to collect certain data at certain times and certain locations.
3) Quality checks for time and location
4) Improvements for people with visual impairments
GLOBE Website
1) Tracking measurements for individual students instead of all ...

I thought October 5, 2021, would be a normal day. I sat in a diner with my family after school, scrolling through my email and sipping a mint chocolate chip milkshake. It had been two months since my NASA STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) internship ended– or so I thought.
Suddenly, I received an intriguing email. The subject line read, “AGU Fall Meeting 2021 Abstract Status Notification.” I had forgotten that my Mosquito Mapping team submitted an abstract in the first place. Taking a break from my milkshake, I curiously opened the email:
“On behalf of the AGU Fall Meeting ...

The robotics professor has been leading the development of a tiny wheeled robot called Iris, which could become the first uncrewed rover sent by the US to explore the Moon.
Iris has not been built by experienced engineers at Nasa or a large aerospace company, but by students at Whittaker's home institution of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh. The robot was recently secured to its lunar lander, ahead of a launch scheduled for 2022.
The project represents a dream come true for the robotics pioneer, whose work has spanned cleaning up nuclear accidents to building ...

In the Toledo area, Dr. C and schools in the area focused on studying artificial turf versus grass soccer and football fields. Artificial turf was much warmer than natural grass. This is combining the GLOBE Urban Heat Island Field Study with research by Vasco Mantas from the University of Coimbra in Portugal and George Xian from the USGS Eros Data Center and the AREN Project with Andy Henry and Geoff Bland.

MISSION EARTH REPORT
During the SEES internship, I got the opportunity to do data collection fieldwork. This required me to go around my neighborhood and take pictures of specific points that had been calculated using a Python notebook. Some of these points were in parts of my neighborhood that I’d never been to, despite being in my fourteenth year of living there. I even saw a pack of wild javelinas in a particularly remote spot! The task definitely took longer than I expected, but it felt good to know that I had contributed data that would actually help NASA scientists.
I also got to brainstorm my ...

Science is dynamic and keeps evolving from one generation to the next. Science concepts might remain constant, but their dynamics change with each discovery or innovation. The making of future scientists starts from the time a child joins the school and continues advancing throughout the K-12 education and into the university.
Education stakeholders in the country saw a gap in how science is taught in schools, especially K-12 education. The standards were not aligning with the current generation and there was a need to improve it to fit into the next generation standards. This is ...
