Regional Initiatives

Regional Collaboration Opportunities

Along with global campaigns and Intensive Observation Periods (IOPs), GLOBE hosts regional initiatives. Using GLOBE protocols, communities in defined regions participate in active research collaborations.

Europe Aerosols Campaign

Current and Upcoming Initiatives

Phenology Initiative

Explore the connection between temperature and tree activity: green-up in the spring and green-down in the fall.

  • Europe and Eurasia – Spring 2027
  • Latin America and Caribbean – TBD
  • North America – August–December and February–June, Annually

Past Initiatives

Air Quality Initiative

Air quality measurements allow researchers to determine how clean or polluted the air is. To help researchers monitor and compare air quality around the world, GLOBE regions created Air Quality Campaigns, where students, teachers and citizen scientists submitted the air quality data they gathered into GLOBE's database.

  • Asia and Pacific – November 2022–January 2023
The Asia and Pacific Air Quality Campaign focused on air pollution and its various effects on the environment and public health.
  • Europe and Eurasia – September 2022–March 2026
The Europe and Eurasia Air Quality Campaign focused on aerosols, NO₂, and PM observations, with each participating country having a different focus theme.
  • North America – September 2022–May 2023
The North America Air Quality Campaign focused on aerosols and how their presence affects cloud formation and type.

Phenology Initiative

Phenology measurements allow researchers to determine how seasonal changes affect local plant life. To help researchers monitor and compare phenological measurements around the world, GLOBE regions created Phenology Campaigns, where students, teachers and citizen scientists submitted the phenology data they gathered into GLOBE's database.

  • Europe and Eurasia – February–June 2025
The Europe and Eurasia Phenology Campaign focused on the seasonal changes of trees, the role that trees play in the global carbon cycle and the way they regulate temperature in urban environments.
  • Latin America and Caribbean – February 2023–December 2025
The Trees Within Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Campaign focused on identifying the most important trees within each region, describing their phenophases and identifying the environmental variables involved in their development.

Water Bodies Regional Intensive Observation Period (IOP)

Water is a precious resource and a vital component for life. It is crucial that water sources are thoroughly studied so that they can be appropriately managed. The Water Bodies IOP focused on exploring local water sources and the environment surrounding them. All GLOBE countries, in all GLOBE regions, were invited to join in this data collection and research endeavor.

  • Africa – April–May 2023
  • Asia and Pacific – September–October 2023
  • Europe and Eurasia – March–May 2023
