Hoping to see you at the  GLOBE Annual Meeting  next week! Loving the session choices and our team has divided up so we can cover them all.   The U.S. Partner session is on Monday afternoon from 3-5pm ET/1-3pm PT (we will end earlier than that, promise!). Our team will share NARM, SRS, and Yearbook news, we will hear from GPO, and announce two RFPs. We will breakout with a couple Jamboard sessions (you know we have fun at those) and end with a Waterfall Chat. A Waterfall Chat might be my new favorite Zoom technique, well, maybe second favorite - I’ll use another one during ...

Happy Friday! Were you wondering about the lack of posts the last few weeks? I was spending some time in the Adirondacks (NY) with my family the week before July 4th and last week I was in Estes Park, CO with the GLOBE and Earth Systems Science Collaboratives . I encourage you to check out their pages for more information about the 7 groups of GLOBE Partnerships and their regional and cross-regional partners. They are doing great work and the discussions were lively around how they could better work together to reach a broader audience of youth, educators and families, leveraging ...

We’ve been posting alot of news stories lately and making them more interesting with pictures. Alicia discovered that when she was adding alt text to the images, it was changing them all to the same alt text. This isn’t a great thing to have happen and we reported it to GLOBE . In the meantime, Haley found a workaround to the problem so take a look at this short video if you are planning on posting a story with pictures and alt text in the near future. Speaking of news stories, here are some for the 2022 SRS: 2022 U.S. GLOBE Student Research Symposia ...

Teachers of Kindergarten to Grade 2 can use stories and observations of nature outside your door to help students understand how the systems of Earth (atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and pedosphere) are connected. Start by reading the Elementary GLOBE story “ All About Earth: Our World on Stage ” to get an overview of some of the connections between the components of the Earth. The story follows a classroom of students as they prepare a play to learn how Earth’s processes are interconnected and how living creatures interact with those processes. [One 30- to 45-minute class ...

The U.S. Office is wrapping up the 2022 local Student Research Symposia (SRS) . Keep an eye out for stories highlighting these events. Thank you to all the teachers, students and Partners who made these events a success! Alicia Carlson (new hire in our office - YEAH!) is working on a couple of GLOBE and Natural Inquirer crosswalks . I made this notebook because I wanted to make a better list of GLOBE schools with many measurements. At first, I tried to look at official metrics ( https://www.globe.gov/about/impact-and-metrics/schools-with-many-measurements ). Unfortunately, the number of data there was different from the number on official schools pages. I asked for an explanation on the GLOBE forum, and I got the following response: > "Different areas of the website count measurements differently.  Some places count the number of rows of data across several database tables.  Other places count ...

At the start of the month, i was invited by SAASTA, a body in South Africa that promotes science in schools to train teachers in 4 districts in 4 days in Mpumalanga. It took me 5hrs of drive from Pretoria to my first venue of training where 40 teachers from different schools welcomed us. Later on we proceeded to two other districts where at least 40 teachers at each venue were introduced to GLOBE, trained in two Atmospheric protocols, how to navigate the website, enter data and shown how to use the GLOBE observer App. The six hour day training empahasised the importance of intergrating ...

Natural cycles are occurring all around us all the time-- but do you notice them? Place-based observation cultivates childrens’ innate sense of wonder while learning about data collection, ecosystems, climate, and plants. This series incorporates resources about leaf color change from the Natural Inquirer and Green-Down Data Collection Protocol from GLOBE to start off the school year engaging upper elementary students with seasonal change. These can be used as-is, or can be grounded in a year-long observation routine of a study site using GLOBE’s What Can We Learn About Our Seasons? ...

Ghana GLOBE in March 2021 collaborated with Noguchi Memorial Institute to train four schools within Greater Accra and its environs on how to identify Mosquito species in their communities.   A total of 20 students,  four teachers and two STEM Coordinators were trained.  As a pilot project,  GLOBE Ghana Coordinator Ms. Berthy Buah took the opportunity to sensitize the schools on the importance of engaging in GLOBE activities in their schools and the numerous benefits awaits them if taken seriously.  Scientists from the Parasitology department also encouraged ...

ALIA, along with the Australian Space Agency and The Office of the Chief Scientist, and with help from Science Time From Space, is very excited to be able to bring an additional science and educational component to NSS 2021 – a science experiment from the International Space Station! The experiment is designed to shed some light on the important issue of climate change. The science concept shown will be that changing the surface of Earth results in changes to sun/earth/space heat balance. When we change the surface of the Earth from trees, oceans and dirt to concrete, bare fields and ...

The University of New Hampshire Carbon Cycle team has started to curate a list of resources that compliment GLOBE Carbon Cycle activities and Protocols . These include videos, websites, peer reviewed articles, and a Q&A section with Dr. Scott Ollinger , ecosystem ecologist at UNH and PI on the Carbon Cycle Project. These resources have been sent to us over the past few years, and have found a home here:  https://www.globe.gov/web/leitzel-center/home/carbon-cycle-resources .  As we encounter more, we will continue to build this list. If you have resources that ...

The big announcement this month was that we made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Student Research Symposia. We have some other activities that we will working on instead, which will support the IVSS and SRS into the future! In other news, I attended a couple virtual multi-day meetings and had lots of resources cross my desk. Some of those are listed below. I look forward to 2021 and the close of 2020. It has been a rough year but kindness abounds and teachers are amazing in supporting students throughout this public health crisis – they inspire me each day. Peace to all of the ...

Fall is a whirlwind of virtual meetings! We had the GLOBE North American Regional Meeting in mid-October and I attended some of the sessions of the GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Meeting . I guess that is one positive from the move to virtual meetings; it opens the opportunity to attend if you cannot travel. Some things that came across my desk this month… Grant opportunity for Maryland schools: https://cbtrust.org/grants/environmental-education/ National Monitoring Conference (virtual) April 19-24, 2021 ...

Happy Fall! This is certainly not the typical beginning of the academic year we had hoped for, but I hear amazing things about GLOBE teachers across the country making it work remotely, through in-person hybrids and for some, completely in-person. I hope you find little tidbits here that you can use.  Stay safe and stay well friends! Resources that came skidding across my desk (aka my dining room table) this month: The STEM for All Multiplex theme of the month was “Leveraging Authentic Data Across STEM Curricula.” Follow the link to see the blog post, playlist and the ...
