Trees Around the GLOBE Campaign Comes to a Close


As the GLOBE Program shifts its focus to support more NASA mission science, 31 October 2026 will serve as the culmination of the Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign. Our last campaign webinar will be on Tuesday, 27 October, at 1 pm ET (17:00 UTC, 18:00 CET). We will post more about the webinar as details are confirmed.  

Over the past 8 years, the campaign has brought together students, educators, scientists, subject matter experts, and citizen scientists from over 70 countries with a goal of better understanding the science of trees and vegetation, land cover and change, spring green-up and fall green-down, and carbon cycle science — all while learning about the grounds-based, airborne, and satellite science from missions across NASA and other space agencies across the world. We brought you live webinars from Estonia, Japan, Mexico, Slovenia, and many places across the United States, and students presented more than 160 student research projects from over 70 GLOBE countries live during 98 monthly campaign webinars.  

We want to thank all our dedicated participants for the amazing 8 years of science, data, and student research — What an amazing GLOBE campaign family! Please keep the data coming in, as your data help NASA missions improve satellite tools and research to better understand Earth systems.  

Although the Trees Around the Campaign will be ending, we want to encourage you to keep studying your local trees and land cover and conducting research using GLOBE.

I am incredibly proud to have been part of the NASA GLOBE Trees Program journey and to see what this program has accomplished over more than eight years!

As the Director of the NJ GLOBE Partnership and the Institute for Earth Observations, I have seen firsthand the incredible breadth and depth of content, professional development, training, resources, and support provided to teachers and students around the world.

The NASA GLOBE Trees Program is much more than teaching students about trees. It is a NASA mission support program for ICESat-2, providing an important connection between student-led, ground-based observations and satellite-based Earth science. Students are able to collect meaningful observations in their own communities and connect those measurements to the larger picture being observed from space.

Over the years, I have been especially impressed by how the program combines hands-on field investigations, authentic scientific data, teacher training, NASA Earth-observing missions, and global collaboration. Teachers are provided with the knowledge and tools to engage their students in real science, while students become active participants in a worldwide scientific community.

Eight years of sustained development, training, and support is a remarkable accomplishment. It demonstrates the value of investing in educators and students for the long term, not simply providing a lesson or activity but building capacity for authentic Earth system science investigations.

I am grateful to NASA, the GLOBE Program, the Trees Science Team, and the many educators, students, scientists, and partners who have made this program such a tremendous success.

Local observations. Global science. NASA satellites. Student scientists because “Citizen Scientists don’t grow on trees” … well maybe.

This is exactly the kind of authentic science education that inspires the next generation to investigate and better understand our changing Earth.

I am proud to consider this team my colleagues, but even more grateful to consider them my friends.
