Europe and Eurasia celebrates The GLOBE Program at the Regional Meeting in Poland

Annual Meeting of the GLOBE countries across Europe and Eurasia Region was hosted in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Country coordinators, trainers, scientists and teachers from 22 countries came together to learn about the most recent activities of the GLOBE Program in the Region and worldwide. Highlights from countries were showed, discussed and inspired many. Successful regional campaigns on aerosols, SMAP and phenology as well as international collaboration projects were presented to show the potential for involving even larger number of schools.

The representative of US Embassy in Poland welcomed participants of the meeting and appreciated the long-term efforts of Polish GLOBE country coordinator (UNEP Grid Warsaw Centre) to promote science and environmental education in Poland.

After two days of successful meeting, even more people joined for the 2nd Educational Conference „Motivate and Attract Students to Science“, which was an inherent part of the GLOBE community meeting this year. More than 80 participants of the conference listened to the key note by the director of the GLOBE Program, Dr. Tony Murphy, who spoke about citizen science.

Training sessions were organized to present the ideas and activities developed within the Motivate and Attract Students to Science Project. The training on Digital Learners focused on engaging students in science through using tools such as online game on climate in cities or social media. During the Early Inquiry workshop, one could follow the inquiry process from the perspective of young learner and wonder how plants intake water. Special focus was aimed on low achievement students: couple of recommendations and learning activities were presented. Eager participants did not hesitate to build a model of ground water pollution in a plastic cup. Some more good practices in science were presented during the Idea market and following sessions. The whole event was concluded by an excursion to the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw.
