U.S. Partners Share Solar Eclipse Activities

The GLOBE U.S. Coordination Office asked GLOBE Partners to share their experiences during the 8 April total solar eclipse. Here’s what they had to say!

Dorian Janney (NASA Goddard) reports that the total solar eclipse was “Totally Amazing!” She worked with Texas Master Naturalist Eclipse Educators, a group of 90 adults, as they learned about both annular and total eclipses. They then shared information and did activities throughout their communities.

Kevin Czajkowski presents about the GLOBE Eclipse Challenge: Clouds and Our Solar-Powered Earth

Kevin Czajkowski (University of Toledo) was a very busy guy leading up to the solar eclipse! He gave many interviews and presentations to introduce the GLOBE Observer app, including with Monroe Museum (Michigan), Channel 11 in Toledo, Channel 13 in Toledo, Detroit Public TV Great Lakes Now (Kevin appears at 28:30), the Niagara Falls Welcome Center, Buffalo State University and Buffalo Museum of Science.

Lin Chambers (NASA Headquarters) participated in the NASA Eclipse "sunspot" at Niagara Falls. In the days leading up to the eclipse, she gave 6 presentations at Niagara Parks Canada featuring GLOBE Observer. On 8 April, Lin handed out ~100 GLOBE Observer Solar Eclipse Journal pages to interested members of the public at the NASA exhibit in the U.S. State Park. She said, “It was very cloudy, but we got a few glimpses of the eclipse.”

The "Sunspotter" helped participants view the eclipse
Todd Toth (NASA Goddard) participated in a solar eclipse event held in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, with more than 1,500 attendees. Activities included use of Sunspotters, solar viewing glasses and mask making, and solar bead color changing bracelets. The eclipse reached 92% coverage and they noticed atmospheric changes, including a temperature drop, s drop in wind speed, and an increase in humidity.
