Fall North American Regional Meeting (NARM) 2019

The WestEd/UC Berkeley GLOBE Partnership recently hosted the annual North American Regional Meeting (NARM) at the University of California Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS). A total of 42 participants from over 30 U.S. GLOBE Partnerships and the GLOBE Country Coordinators of Canada and the United States attended this 3-day event. The first day, October 15th, started with a Professional Development (PD) workshop followed by the 2-day meeting.

Partnering with the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), the PD workshop included two breakout sessions highlighting presentations on the GLOBE website (by David Overoye) , MyNASAData (by Tina Harte, NASA Langley), STEM Equity (by Josette Neal De-Staton, WestEd) and Urban Protocols (by Tracy Ostrom, WestEd). Dr. Ron Cohen from UC Berkeley's Department of Chemistry Atmospheric Science gave a keynote address about the Future of Urban Air, highlighting his work with the BEACON Project. Additional presentations from Todd Toth (NASA Goddard), Becca Hathaway (UCAR) and Jon Boxerman (WestEd) rounded out the day on remote sensing, a middle school weather unit and project rubrics, respectively.

The North American Regional Meeting took place on October 16th & 17th at LHS and opened with a welcome from the NASA Program Manager, Dr. Allison Leidner. Both days were filled with presentations, lightning talks, and keynote speakers. It was great to reconnect with GLOBE partners as far away as Alaska, Connecticut, Wisconsin and Georgia. Together GLOBE partners presented on their GLOBE work. The U.S. Partner Forum updated the community about their upcoming goals for the year. Jennifer Bourgeault, United States Country Coordinator, shared a glimpse into the data being analyzed about the impact of the Student Research Symposia and Kevin O'Connor, the Country Coordinator from Canada, shared the great strides that have been made to expand the GLOBE network throughout the country. Dr. Emily Schaller also presented on a collaborative project with GLOBE students in the Philippines.

Keynote speaker Dr. Rena Dorph from LHS presented to participants on Activating Youth Towards STEM Learning and Career Pathways. Dr. Tameka McGlawn of CCASN at UC Berkeley presented on Effectively Integrating Equity DNA in STEM: A Systemic and Constructivist Approach. Both keynote addresses provided thoughtful discussion during lunchtime. The GLOBE Mission EARTH team hosted a rotation with 6 table talks in the afternoon of the final day of the NARM: Career Development, Learning Progressions, Phenology, Scientific Practices and Urban Heat Islands. Participants were invited to learn about the hard work this group has been involved with through their NASA CAN grant.

Dr. Tony Murphy, the GLOBE Implementation Office Director, concluded the event with a peek into 2020 with GLOBE's 25th Anniversary, new initiatives and planned Earth Day events.
